Bears are symbols of strength and wisdom to many Native Americans. This is a doll representing a Hopi Kachina dancer, most probably the White Bear Kachina, which has strong healing powers. Kachinas are spirits beings and are still an important part of the ceremonial and religious life of the Hopi, a Native American tribe who live primarily in villages on and at the base of three mesas on the southern edge of the Black Mesa in North-eastern Arizona, USA. Kachina dancers take part in the religious celebrations personifying the various spirit beings.

Doll found at a flea market in Göttingen, Germany in the early 2000s. Original date and place of production unknown.
