This sculpture from the 11th century CE was made by Presbyter Martinus in Upper Italy. Mary is seated on the Throne of Solomon as in Roman Catholic tradition she, like the Biblical king Solomon, is also associated with wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae). The Christ child is seated on her lap. The lions under the throne are indicative of the Throne of Solomon. Her rather grim expression is because she has been made in the Byzantine tradition.
